First Poem

I never considered attempting to write poetry or anything meaningful until a buddy of mine was suffering with a broken heart. We were 18. He had it bad for a girl we worked with. She had a boyfriend (who was a jerk). My friend was giving up, but he wanted to send her flowers and a poem for her birthday. He couldn't come up with anything and asked me to help him. I thought about what he was feeling and wrote this:

The flowers are to let you know
Just exactly how I feel.
About a love I can never show
And a heart I can never steal.

It was bad, but it did get him a pity date. Haha! But really, he was too good for her.

The only reason I remember it now is because at the time I thought, "Hmmm, maybe I'll be able to use this myself someday." LOL. It never happened.

The only reason I thought to share it now is because Krissy posted a really nice bit of poetry she wrote at 14. If you haven't seen it yet, you should visit her page.

  1. This is cute Rick. I saw Krissy's poem too, impressive for a 14y/o.

Maybe I can share your poem with my boys in case they'll need it one of these days. I'll tell them Uncle Rick composed this poem for you. Hahaha! But mommy won't allow them to suffer a broken heart. I'm such a stage mom.

  3. At least it got him something,
that's what matters right? Guys who give poems are sweet, even sweeter when they made it themselves :)

  6. @Leah: I know you're teasing, but I like th esound of that. A stage mom...LOL!

@Mel and russ: I wish I'd known to do that for myself instead of someone else! =)

@Toothfairy: The "something" you write is great!

@Shibby: I appreciate that a lot, but I don't think I deserve any awards. Thank you!!!

  7. Ahhhh! I love the poem. Short, sweet, and a little heart breaking.

I am a fan of unrequited love, even though it sucks.

  15. @eQ: Me too, but I learned the hard way once that the wanting is sometimes more fun than the having! =)

@applePIE: Haha, yes he should have! He thought he didn't have it in him, but I'm sure he did.

@Ailee Verzosa: Thank you! I need to try that flavor combination.

@krissy ♥: I've been lucky--and those 4 lines seem more sad every time I read them now!

@Leah: Haha! This could really be fun, combining our superpowers and using them for a little harmless mischief!!! =)

@Megara: Thanks! Fortunately it worked out well. The date seemed to make him feel better.

@Steph: "This message is to let you know..." Haha! That's a great idea.

i wish i'd kept them, i could have blogged abt them haha. i still don't know who sent me those, but i figure i dnt really want to know >_<

  19. Ahhh speaking of poems, I had the lyrics to Invisible Man by 98 Degrees disguised as the work of a guy who was infatuated with me. I was like hmmm this looks familiar hahaha~

  20. @Christy: He's a really sweet dog. He's having trouble training us, but he keeps trying. =) Greeting cards...that's a good idea. I could have some that are sentimental and some that say other things we have trouble saying. Like "Dear house guest--GET OUT!!!" Hahaha!

@michelle: I did my accounting homework during english class, so my grades weren't great in english (or any language).

@Manju: Those things could be romantic--if the poems weren't creepy! They would have made a great post for you. =)

@Blair: Haha! I always give credit when I borrow words, but I'd rather use my own.
