Last month I shared with my wife what a particular song brought to mind for me. She told me I was wrong, because she'd seen the video and "that song is about a funeral." My interpretation was much more positive than the video.
Maybe it's like reading a book and then being disappointed when the movie version comes out.
PS - As noted above, my imagination is generally a pretty positive place. Not like Bender, the robot on Futurama. In one episode he talked in his sleep while dreaming. Repeatedly he said, "Kill all humans. Kill all humans." He woke up surrounded by his human friends and told them he'd just had "the most wonderful dream". Then, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, he informed them that, "You were there and you were there..." I can't believe they didn't disassemble him. =)
i loved watching music videos on MTV growing up, had my fair share of being a fangirl (over boy bands. LOL) and back then it wasnt about my imagination, it was all about Nick Carter. Hahahaha :P
ReplyDeleteI havent seen Futurama yet, i'll ask Lurvey to DL so we can watch it this weekend! :)
this is also the same reason I prefer books than audio books...I prefer to imagine what they sound like rather than hear someone's actual voice reading the lines for me.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have not seen one movie version that's better than the book. They always seem to pale in comparison.
You're too funny, Rick. I gotta agree with you though - I don't like music videos too. Heyyy. Your blog looks different! Have a great Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteAs I started reading your post I was thinking that it is just like reading a book and being disappointed by the movie. Clearly great minds think alike.
ReplyDelete"that song is about a funeral." LOL! What a way to dampen the positivity. xD
ReplyDeleteI’m fine with music videos in general coz like what you said, I do like some of them when I watch them and I could sense the feelings they’re trying to portray. Yet, I know exactly what you mean by spoiling the mental image you have of the song.
ReplyDeleteOn a totally different scale from your positive imagery, I wonder if you’ve watched Total Eclipse of Your Heart MV before. When I first watched it, I was like WTF (excuse my tone) is this truly the original MV coz it looks totally farcical. And then if you managed to you tube the literal lyrics version, it’s really hilarious. Somehow I’m trying to youtube for it right now but the videos seem to have been removed.
I realised that Sony removed the official video and the parady but there are many people who recorded and uploaded. Try searching for it and let me know what you think. =)
ReplyDeleteI get that...
ReplyDeleteI also have different interpretations
in every song..
i'm really good at imagining videos for songs. one time, before the black eyes peas became huge and autotuned, i thought of a video for their old song "shut up." like in my head i could see the entire video, right down to the details such as wardrobe and choreography. then when i watched the video and you wouldn't believe it...my imagined video was almost identical!
ReplyDeleteso yea sometimes it's kinda cool to compare your interpretation vs. theirs.
Haha...I don't watch Futurama but Bender sounds like a funny guy. XP I'm more visual so I kinda prefer videos more...hehe.
ReplyDelete(Ok, a wooden bar?! ;)
hahhahha...oh that gave me a good laugh. but I agree with you..we have different perceptions on whatever:) so gooo!!hehe
ReplyDeleteSongs can be interpreted in so many ways a lot of the time. I remember one time when I was much younger, i had a debate with a friend about whether a song was about someones lover or someones family member. haha!
ReplyDeletewow, haha. I tend to like watching music videos. ^_^
ReplyDeleteAww you're not wrong! Sometimes the video concept is totally different from the song, or only expresses part of its meaning.
ReplyDeleteHERRO!!! just wanted to say i loved the comment you left on my post! thank you! :D
ReplyDeletemusic videos are always interesting! especially the rap song mtvs. haha! you would see a lot of sexy dancers shaking their booty!
ReplyDeletei was fond of watching mtvs when i was in highschool, but they dont interest me now, except if i love the artist, then i'll go ahead and watch it online.
funny, i youtubed some 50's music. in the videos, only the artists photo are shown. i started to appreciate the music more, even with a single photo! anyway, i found out that johnny mathis songs are good. i am listening to "chances are" now! good stuff!
lol that's funny.. yea I usually imagine my own 'music video' too : )

He's got his own hand cream! Haha! I kinda turned him into a metro but it's ok b/c I hate rough hands. ;)
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to that pic. XD
lol, maybe to you the glass is always half full instead of half empty ;) I always thought it'd be cool to have a music video, but that would require you making a music first... and I can't sing for the life of me so. hahah
ReplyDeleteHihihi. We all interpret things differently. :P Sometimes the concept in music videos have nothing to do with the song/track. :D
ReplyDeleteHahaha.... that was a good story. I love Bender.
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't exactly lying...in a different syntax. I like music videos, though. :-)
