Christmas Past

Every year my dad put our tree up on Christmas Eve. He would wrestle it into the stand while speaking the same strange language as the dad in "The Christmas Story." I always helped decorate the tree. After arranging ornaments, we placed tinsel on the tree one strand at a time. Our tree topper is to the right—the beard hair came from Santa himself (haircut clippings).

One year we went caroling. My dad and sisters always went to midnight Mass--they were in the church choir. After my chores, I made macaroni bracelets (or something like that) for my sisters, cards for my parents, and tried to play Christmas music on my grandpa’s ancient electric organ (we had a “by the numbers” guide). A turkey was usually soaking in salt water.

Since Santa had so much ground to cover, my folks told him not to wrap our presents. He created a pile for each person--so the excitement was figuring out which pile was yours. Every year I got a some combination of pants, a shirt, socks or underwear—somehow Santa always knew what I needed most. And there would be THE present. One year it was a doctor's kit. One year a plastic trumpet (no parent would give a noise-maker like that to their son). When I got older, one year I received a chess set.

We visited family during the holidays, including my dad's sister. She made amazing homemade cookies. But at her house the kids had to sit and listen to the adults talk for what seemed like hours…often debating the shortest route to places I'd never been. Snore!

Favorite Christmas Memory:
Instead of going to midnight Mass one year, I stayed home with my mom. We watched "A Christmas Carol" (1938 version). She let me have eggnog and fruitcake. I like eggnog. I like fruitcake. But combined they made me sick. Despite the upset stomach, that night with my mom is one of my favorite Christmas memories.

Least Favorite Christmas Memory:
Taking tinsel off the tree! My father wanted to keep the tinsel to reuse the next year. So we had to take it all off one strand at a time. The tinsel was older than I was.

Christmas as an Adult:
The tree goes up mid-month with no hassle--not until the 18th this year. Santa always wraps my kids' presents, even though I've asked him not to. When we get together with family I always start a conversation about the best way to get to a particular place…to keep the tradition alive and to annoy the kids a little. They’ve heard the story and know why I do it.

Hopefully this Christmas season will create new fond memories for my family and I hope it does the same for all of my friends. Whether you celebrate or not, I wish you and your loved ones the peace and joy of the season!!!

PS - When I was 15 I asked my mom for another doctor's kit. I told her ALL teenage boys enjoy playing doctor!!! She didn't think that was funny.

  1. Thanks for sharing your Christmas Memories with us!! My Christmas this year will be... well, different, since I'm in Tokyo and my family is in Germany. It is the first time for me to be "alone" at Christmas time, and I really miss my tree, my presents, the snow and family. But it's also cool to spend another Christmas this year. I think I'm gonna meet up with my single friends (cause Christmas is an event for couples in Japan, lol), if I'm not gonna manage to get a Christmas Date, hahaha!

I wish you and your family a lovely Christmas, my dear friend :-)

  2. Oh you’re so lucky you get the festive wrestle with your Father every Christmas. My family don’t celebrate birthdays or Christmas (we’re a pretty melancholy bunch) but that’s only because throughout my childhood my parents would use to have to work seven days a week, twelve hours a day (and still do bless them) due to running their own restaurant. When you have a Father with an obsession with food and minor ODC and a Mother with a mathematical brain and a natural pioneer business trait and combined the two (you create me hehe nah, well yes) you create workaholics. But promise me one thing that you will be home with your family this Christmas and a hundred Christmases to come after this one. Have a very Merry Christmas!

  3. Awww, your memories are so sweet!!! Hehe, mothers are bound to NOT find it funny when their teenage boys tell her they love playing doctor! Poor mothers... *shakes head*

I had to laugh out loud at your "I always start a conversation about the best way to get to a particular place…to keep the tradition alive and to annoy the kids a little." hahhaha, poor kids! You seem to torment all around you! ;)

Merry Xmas to you and your family!!!

  6. Your description of your dad using "A Christmas Story" language made me smile. Although I am sure your dad wasn't smiling at the time. I don't think dads using that particular vocabulary have smiles on their faces!

That is a very sweet memory you have of spending Christmas Eve with your mom. And the 1938 version of A Christmas carol is the best. No subsequent version will ever be able to top it.

Have a wonderful Christmas with your family. (That would be as opposed to a Hammond Celebration Failure.) :-)

  7. haha... we recycle tinsel too! :-p we put them on in clumps, so it'll be easier to collect them. Oh hey, you have a funny Santa... he doesn't do as he's told.

    I love Christmases too. :-)

  8. Taking old tinsel off? Not cool! That's something I'd imagine the dad in "A Christmas Story" doing with Ralphie and Randy. XD

  9. my first xmas tree was last year, when myself and housemate decided, it was finally time to get a proper xmas tree and decorate it, considering that we finally had extra money to get one (i was poor as a student, can you believe it? ahahhahah medical textbooks are expensive!)

i was the fun-nest xmas nights i've had. we kept the tree until it turned brown and housemate couldn't stand the dirty floor LOL.

  12. Your comment made me question myself about the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol. I was wrong. The version we watch is the 1951 movie with Alastair Sim. Now you can go back to your rightful place as the only person who watches the 1938 version. :-)

  13. I picture your dad as a nazi dad whenever I read anecdotes of your family.

We don't usually have traditional family xmas gathering here or at least not in my family. Each of us would have our own program. We used to set up the xmas tree while christmas songs played from the hi fi. After we got our cat, we didn't set up the tree anymore. After our cat died, we still didn't set up the tree for in its place is my parents' mess which takes up the whole floor space.

  22. Your father is very economical!! I couldn't stop lol-ing at this post, so many laughter inducing lines 'I like eggnog. I like fruitcake. But combined they made me sick.' and 'The tinsel was older than I was.' Did he buy new ones years later or were you guys still stringing the old ones?

    Have a wonderful Christmas!!!!
