As you may have guessed from earlier stories, my dad wanted his kids to be security conscious, to be aware of what’s going on and react to it. In my youth, sometimes the reaction was good and sometimes it was just odd—and there were other times that aren’t worth mentioning. LOL! This story is about one of the odd reactions.
It was a Friday night and I was driving my girl home after a date. We were 18. Like me, she lived in a somewhat secluded area…no street lights and lots of room between houses. As I made the turn into her neighborhood, police lights started to flash behind us. I was certain I had done nothing to be pulled over, but I stopped.
As I pumped my brakes and looked in the rear view mirror I noticed the car really did not look like a police car—not even an unmarked one. I got suspicious, but wasn’t sure. I didn’t want to just sit there and wait for some maniac to walk up to the car. I also didn’t want to drive off, leading some maniac to my girlfriend’s house—or have it appear I was running from the police. What to do, what to do??? I came up with a third choice. Like my father, I kept a small baseball bat (and tools, a snow shovel, a blanket, etc) in my car, just in case. You never know what you’ll need!!!
I grabbed the bat and told my GF to get in the driver’s seat, keep the doors locked, and keep an eye on me in the mirror. If it was not a policeman, she should drive someplace safe. {Why didn’t I just do that? Kids!} Anyway, I got out of the car and walked at an angle towards the middle of the road and back towards the “police” car. I didn’t want to be too close to it. Soon I could see there were three guys in the car, but not their faces.
Me: Is there a problem officer?
Guys in car: What are you doing with that bat?
Me: It depends if you’re policemen or not.
Guys in car: {lots of laughter}
Then they turned on the car’s interior light and I could see a friend of mine sitting in the back seat. He was out with two guys (who had a flashing light for some reason???) and convinced them to play a little joke when he spotted my car. We chatted for a few minutes. Before I left I told them they were lucky my dad was not driving my car because he would have shot them. He would NOT have done that, but I wanted to give them something to think about before they considered playing that potentially dangerous joke again.
Moral of the story: I got lucky. I NEVER, never, never should have gotten out of the car. I should have done what I wanted my GF to do—drive to a well lit, populated area. I hope none of you are ever in that position. But if you are, don’t get out of the car like I did—even if you do have a baseball bat with you. =)
ahahahahahahaha. baseball bat to the rescue! i'll remember to bring baseball bat with me. ya know, just in case. (despite the fact that i don't have one, but that's not the point, i guess) ;p
ReplyDeleteHaha it's like you like to confront people or something, even if you know they may be dangerous & may hurt you! Like that time you got out of your car to yell at that trucker..haha
ReplyDeleteoh I didn't know that you gave me an award before ! I should go look back at that post..
& i dont remember how old i was when i took the lesson. maybe in gr 3? haha my parents knew i told them i didnt want to go anymore.
& lol at your friend and his violin lessons ! it reminds me of this one time...my little sister really wanted to take violin lessons at school and she brought home the forms and everything, but my parents didnt want to let her..but I filled in the form for her (name, address, etc) but left the payment part blank. one day my sister comes home and tells my parents they owe the music teacher like..$400 for the violin rental and lessons and my parents were like what ?!?!?
i was in elementary school but even i knew that the music teacher should not have accepted a form filled out by a kid with the payment section left empty ! silly silly haha.
@applepie: But the trucker HAD to be informed he was the dangerous driver that day, not me! How else will he learn??? ahahaha!!
ReplyDeletehahhahah... i remember my father:) he was one of the watchman at our small village and he always had a bat with him everynight!
ReplyDeletehmm..nice one Rick! good day!
thank god those were just your friends. the moment you got out of the car i was wondering why you did that. nowadays, it is best to stay inside the car. thanks for the tip about pulling over at a more lighted/populated area--that made sense.
ReplyDeletehave a great thursday!
That is too dangerous... you were just lucky. Here in the Philippines, you can never do that or else, you'll see the end of your happy life.
ReplyDeletedaaaang rick, you're super ballsy! no wonder your girl is still with you (i'm right, right?).
ReplyDeleteone of my biggest fears is a fake cop pulling me over and attacking me. there was a southland episode based on that. talk about scary!
Woahh..I would never ever get out of the car if that ever happened to me (not that I want to)..I think I will just drive away..
ReplyDeletebwahahahahahahaha! you paranoid little boy! they could've shot you point blank! i don't drive but there is a moral to this story that i should (MUST!) keep in mind. thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeletep/s; you've got a shovel in your car?! what are you going to bury.. a policeman? :P
Good thing they were just your friends. Lols. I should tell my mom to keep a shovel in our car too. After all it's just me and my mom right now, so we might need Mr. Shovel or Mr. Bat to the rescue. =)
ReplyDeleteHAHAHAHAHAHA... that is hilarious. Great friends you have there. ;)
ReplyDeleteI keep a pocket knife with me at all times... does that count for anything?
Safety is pretty much taken for granted over here in Singapore.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if we sell baseball bats anywhere here, can I just use an umbrella, or a durian shell, or some other weapon that can blend in with the crowd?
Your girl must have felt really safe with ya.
gosh ric, if those weren't your friends, that was a very dangerous and stupid yet courageous thing to do! *applause* i would have stepped on the gas and zoomed away to get to a police station hahaha getting a ticket (or being called a coward and paranoid) is waaay better than taking a bullet or a stab or being beat up whatever. hahaha ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL @ SHINGO T! ^^ Durian shells can blend really well in crowds hahaha :D
I didn't know it was so dangerous too in the US! Luck you it was just a joke, it could have be otherwise and it could have ended worse...
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of your baseball bat (which is a genius idea to have one in the car :-) I don't really have anything with me with which I could defend myself in a such a case. Maybe an unmbrella or my keys??? Where do I get a baseball bat? XDD
Let's hope none of us really gets into such a dangerous situation, where the outcome can be so bad...

ReplyDeletethats a nice funny/action/thriller part of your life rick.
ReplyDeletedark location, inside the car with a girl, strange car behind you, baseball bat, huge courage to step out of the car, friends, and laughter.
its funny at the end but i got scared while reading the first part of the story.
this post is a good reminder to us girls whenever situation like that happens. i will now remember to always stop my car to a place where there are a lot of people.
Eeek!!! That is scary. I would've driven off as fast as I could!! I'm a scaredy-cat though.
ReplyDeleteclothed much, a modest fashion blog
don't ever ask about Indo, whether its just prank or the real policemen, both individuals are highly corrupt-minded. we wont even think about safety anymore.
ReplyDeleteWah? No new post today? That's ok, I skipped yesterday too. Thank you... I'm super excited that someone wanted to carry my bracelets in her shop. What a compliment! And the money ain't so bad either... ;)
ReplyDeleteI actually didn't do a C post today... I did something different. But cuff bracelet for C is a good idea. Typing in my blackberry... now.
Rick, I think I'm missing you... you haven't been over to my blog for a while. *sobs*
