I didn’t plan to write about the time I was robbed at gunpoint, it’s not that interesting. But I mentioned in my last post that it was NOT my scariest moment and that got me thinking about it. The one aspect of it I find interesting is what I had to do the next morning.
Once upon a time I worked for a fast food chain. I asked for a nickel raise and instead they made me an assistant manager (with a 10 cent raise—LOL). Later I was asked to work night shifts for a few weeks at a different location. Two of the assistants there quit. It was a bad neighborhood, but I accepted. Their one remaining assistant was going to work with me the first two nights to help me get to know their crew and any minor differences in procedures.
The first night went well. After we closed, the other assistant and I headed to the bank across the street to make the nightly deposit. As we crossed the street, motion to the right caught my attention. I saw two guys walking from behind the restaurant. In the dark I thought they were the guys who worked the grill that night and I kept walking towards the bank. The other assistant stopped. Five seconds later he went flying past me and down onto the sidewalk—he had been punched. I turned to see two men wearing ski-masks, one holding a sawed-off shotgun and the other holding a handgun. They didn’t hit me or even come close. They just told me to get down on the sidewalk next to the other guy.
Once I was down, one of the men came over to take the deposit from my hand. When he grabbed it he also got my company-issued tie. I started to ask him to leave it (a very cool black number with little orange H’s all over it), but I decided he wanted it more than I did. LOL! The other robber started giving us instructions. The dude went on and on and on. I felt like we were getting to be old friends, so I turned my head to look back at him. That wasn’t smart. As I turned my head, I very quickly had the shotgun barrel pressed against my left cheek and the side of my nose. When the crook asked what I was looking at, of course I said “nothing” and turned back around. Finally they ran off.
Anyway, we were stuck talking to the police until 3:00 in the morning. I didn’t feel any fear during the entire incident. But it did catch up to me later. When I was driving home I looked at my speedometer and saw that I was driving 80 mph in a 40 mph zone--and I felt shaky. I don’t know exactly what I was feeling (fear, anger, anxiety, frustration, helplessness???), but it was affecting my driving.
I went to bed around 4:00am, but had to get back up at 6:30am. I had to get up early because it was the first day of school--my senior year of high school. I was 17. It was a pretty memorable (and unpleasant) way to spend the last night of my last summer vacation as a high school kid!
PS – The other assistant called in sick the next night. I was on my own. I ended up making a game out of the night deposit. I had the cashiers stand in the lobby, looking out the windows in each direction and I had the grill workers take out the trash and scout behind the restaurant as I dashed across the street to the bank. We were all laughing. That turned out to be my last night there. My car died and it was too far to walk (it was a 30 minute drive) so I went back to working at my restaurant. There was more to this part, but it is too b-o-r-i-n-g!!!
Hmmmmm... the tie with an orange H... could it be Hermes? Shocks, what a loss! Sorry about my petty concern, I was so drawn to the H in the tie. :-)
ReplyDeleteLOL at "I felt like we were getting to be old friends"!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that is one scary experience! I had my phone snatched when I was riding a bus, thankfully I was not robbed at gunpoint, I would have fainted!
But wow, you were just in highschool then? So brave, Rick! You really are a GI Joe! :D
Haven't experienced any of the robbing at gun point thing. But I have witnessed lots of incidents like this. It's rampant here. One just needs to be very very careful especially if it's pay day.
ReplyDeleteI have not experienced being robbed and I am not praying for it to happen either!
ReplyDeleteI always have in my mind what my father always keeps on telling me and my sisters:
1. Vary our daily travel routine. This would cause confusion to potential criminals who knows where we usually pass by.
2. When walking, look into the eyes of people around you - to intimidate and to make us remember their faces.
I know it sounds ridiculous but its for the safety of me and my siblings. My dad is a court judge and we usually receive threats from people with cases he decided against them.
My siblings and I are authorized gun owners, we practice shooting and other tactical methods in a military camp site near my parent's home.
It is hard growing up with the kind of lifestyle that we have.
I am glad that nothing bad happened to you during that time =)
um...i probably would've peed my pants. having a gun in your face?! are you kidding me?! gahhhh!!!
ReplyDeletethat was one scary incident I probably fainted if I were you!! but it's true sometimes we're too shocked that we feel nothing and the shock catches up hours after @.@
ReplyDeleteit's a wise move to quit the job though lolz whatever the reason is!!
I think it is very scary! If I had been in your place, I probably wouldn't have moved or said anything, just hand over the money, since I love my life!
ReplyDeleteThat remembers me when my older sis was robbed in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where she was living and working for about 4 years. But there were no weapons, the thief just took her handbag and ran away, just a few steps before her apartment door. But she was scared to hell!
I hope something like this will never happen to me and the people I know.
hmm...
ReplyDeletebravo???
damn my brain doesn't work after sleep-deprived for more than 24hours. not good! ahahah.
hehehehe! why did you remove your comment....?
ReplyDeleteSO WEIRD! Was the tie that nice? Hahaha! Maybe he needed a tie for a job interview the next day or something.

ReplyDeleteLike I said.. You are such a bad ass! When adrenaline takes over, you don't feel fear, so kudos to you for staying calm and going back!
ReplyDeleteMy BF got held up at gun point for $6 when he was in college!!!! I would shit my pants. TMI =(
Whoa, I would've peed my pants!!! That is so crazy. But I"m glad you didn't freak out at all. AT least you didn't have to go back there for too long afterwards!

WOW scary! How cool that you were a senior in HS AND you were like an assistant manager lol.
ReplyDeletep.s. the docs are comfy i guess, i haven't worn them enough to really know yet.! =]
Hilarious! Just found you over on Steph @ Here I Go Thinking Again and started following... I'm sure it was scary at the time, but what a great story later! :)

ReplyDeletePS... No date Rick... I wanted to be the date. Hahaha! He went with friends. And he almost won the Prom King.
ReplyDeleteIt was shocking. No wonder it affected your driving ... twas a delayed reaction. I guess it sunked in very very slowly. Thank God nothing untoward happened to the both of you.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed how you manage to stay calm when that happened.
ReplyDeleteGlad you were safe.
thanks for your comment. I really mean it. Got me re-think about some stuff...he said he can't wait no more...and yes i also agree with if you love someone so much you're willing to wait..but in my case...he has been waiting for a long long and he has stop loving me...
ReplyDeleteYou sound so nonchalant, talking about it, rick. Hmm...I reckon the fight or flight reaction doesnt make us scared at first, but, of all things...you had to think about your tie. LOL. Now that's capital. good thing you didn't end up scarred.a shotgun to the head is not something one would easily forget.
ReplyDeleteStill, if one doesn't take it too seriously, one just might live through the thing to tell the tale. and you did. :-)
Wow, crazy story. Glad you didn't get hurt. I would have probably just passed out from sheer stress in a moment like that.
ReplyDeleteYes, just stick to B&BW for your wife. Much easier on the wallet, more variety, and she won't have dry skin that smells like dead flowers haha.
I think my husband actually enjoys how the workers swarm him like bee's on honey and recommend tons of things to him. I don't think half the time he even knows what exactly he bought for me he just lets them recommend things and pays for them.
great post rick !

How could you not have been scared with a gun to your cheek?! Just thinking about it freaks me out !!
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean you didn't get to keep your tie..? haha.
^I think being in that kind of situation really numbs you and your body automatically zones you out and you become a lot calmer. If we become unable to function in scary situations, we would be in more danger than we already are.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very scary thing to experience as a 17 year old! I think that's probably why a lot of places have at least two people working at night, especially. Thank goodness no one got hurt!
hahaa yea..my 2 weeks early birthday gift..i see that this year everyone likes to give me a birthday gift 2 weeks earlier. Last year..i only got One birthday gift from my ...ex. Thats it. My whole family left me alone at Vancouver cuz i had school and they went to NYC...oh well!
