Ruined Pumpkin

I just threw out my Halloween jack-o-lantern!  It and the Christmas tree were both hauled away on the same morning this week.

We didn't carve a pumpkin last Halloween.  My son drew a face on it instead...and we decided that as long as it stayed in good shape, we would leave it on the front porch.  Everyone loves jack-o-lanterns,  Right?

That demonstrates something about pumpkins (butternut squash, sweet potatoes, etc.).  As long as you keep them in a dry, cool (not cold) place, they'll keep for months.  In my family it was normal for our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to include squash and sweet potatoes we'd grown ourselves the previous summer (we didn't grow pumpkins).

Thanks to the really cold weather we had last week, this happened:

The pumpkin froze.  When it thawed, it stayed in one piece, but felt like a bag of water.  I was very grateful it didn't break open when I moved it (with a shovel)...that would have been a gross mess.  Although, that would have been a cool thing for the kids to see.  Maybe next year!  :)

Did anyone else leave any holiday decorations out way too long this year???

  1. Brr, poor pumpkin. There's always this year for a new one + you & your son can have more than 1 and try putting a mustache of some sort on it.

    PS.
It's also freezing ( ok, that's a little exaggerated but it is cold ) here in Manila.

    1. Wow, that (the cold) is really unusual--isn't it???
I like the idea about the moustache! I'm not sure if we can find a pumpkin now--the stores only seem to sell them in September and October and any left at pumpkin patches would have rotted by now. So we'll have to do it next year. :)

    1. It bothered my son that the pumpkin stayed out there so long. But for next year my daughter wants to leave it on the porch until it shrivels up. :)

  3. It definitely would have been a gross mess if it busted open, I'm kind of curious now

  4. Cool frozen pumpkin! We had our pumpkin out until well past Thanksgiving. I think they last that long bc we didn't carve it

    1. Once we got to December my son was bothered by the pumpkin still being on the porch. But the rest of us liked it--and I wanted to see how long it would last.

  5. I can't believe you were able to keep your pumpkin for that long. Ours usually lasts maybe 1 month at most!

    1. I was surprised too, since it was outside the whole time. To save homegrown butternut squash or sweet potatoes we stored them in our basement (which was cool and mostly dry).

    1. That's awesome! :D I should have cut the mouth just a little to make it gruesome looking.

  7. Uhh I still have my tree up hehe. Don't worry, it's artificial. It just looks so pretty with all its lights that I feel reluctant to take it down!

    1. :D I think we'll do the same whenever we switch to an artificial tree. I know it will go up earlier!

    1. It would be an accomplishment (sort of) to wait long enough for those to go bad sitting inside. I could do it, I'm just saying I'd have to really not try. :)

  10. Why, Hello there!
Looks like your pumpkin has a five o'clock shadow. I've never carved a pumpkin in my life. The closest was watching my dad carve a turnip!
BTW, Spotted your comment on my blog to which I had replied (I think), it's been that long since I've blogged, let alone receive comments! :)

    1. Welcome! Most years we carve a pumpkin--not fancy, just the typical triangles for eyes and a nose along with a jagged smile. I should post pictures of those old ones all lit up.

  11. I almost thought I was viewing an Oct post. I wished I could see how the insides of Jack looked like after he had a brush with Thor. Must have been really mindblowing!

    1. It does look like a throwback post. We'll have to see if my curiosity about seeing the insides outweighs not wanting to clean up a mess. :)
