I'm never going to see a doctor "just in case" ever again!!! Okay, I will, but no time soon. As the ER doctor suggested after my kidney stone experience, I followed-up with a visit to a urologist today "just in case". They needed various fluid samples for testing and the nurse who drew the blood had a really hard time. She poked that needle around in my arm over and over and over. But I didn't mind, it didn't hurt...much. Soon the doc came in the room, told me I was stone free and had nothing to worry about. He did suggest drinking more water and avoiding tea, coffee, salt and red meat--a standard recommendation. Then it happened (and I was wishing to be poked with the needle again instead).
I had started thinking about where to have lunch, but then the doctor asked a completely unrelated question. One men don't like hearing. "When was your last prostate exam?" I swear I could hear the shower scene music from "Psycho". I considered bolting for the door, but there was a nurse between me and freedom. I controlled the fight or flight instinct and answered honestly--"I've never had the exam" and I asked the doc, "But can't we just be friends and only do the blood test???" He chuckled and said it was important to do the physical exam too. I knew he was right. My dad had prostate cancer, so it was irresponsible of me to not have ever had the exam. I'm responsible about everything else. Couldn't I just be irresponsible about this???
I knew what I had to do--I shoved the nurse and ran. LOL, no, I had the exam. It was unpleasant, but at least now I know I'm 100% healthy in that regard.
So the moral to this story is that to protect our health, we sometimes have to do things we'd rather avoid...women probably more so than men. But it's important to take care of yourself--and I mean YOU!!! If you've been putting off a check-up of one sort or another, call and make the appointment today. If you don't take care of yourselves, who will read my dumb stories? Hahaha, that's right...don't do it for yourself or your loved ones, do it for ME!!! ;P
Have a great weekend everyone!
Now that you've said it, I haven't been to the doctor for ages. But not because I was lazy, it's just that I haven't been sick for such long time... Hope there's no huge thing coming up next time I do a check-up XDDD
ReplyDeleteWish you a great weekend as well! :)
i'm a self proclaimed urologist right, (or at least that what i think i want to do, but anyways) my previous boss always made me do prostate exam because she said "you need to know how to feel diseased prostates" which was fair enough.
ReplyDeleteand now i do rectal exams because i'm doing general surgery. FML big time.
just so you know, as much as it is unpleasant for you to get invaded, it's double and sometimes triple the time it is unpleasant to us. hehehe.
but i feel your suffering.
OMG Rick. For a second I thought you were actually lecturing me about health and stuff. Know what?! I've only had blood tests and urinalysis done. Others exams, none. I know I know...I really should. I will, one of these days. =) have a great weekend Rick
ReplyDeletehahah for a second I thought you were telling the truth about shoving the nurse! Seems like a reasonable course of action to me ;)
ReplyDeleteO_O I was just thinking about my health today. I know that I'm only 21, but I'm definitely going towards that aging direction where I REALLY HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF! I think I get so paranoid about my health!
ReplyDeleteWait... the other test was painful? To check for prostate cancer that is...? RIGHT?
-Abby
P.S. I'll definitely take care of myself so that I can read more of your "dumb" stories. Uh huh!
oh im so glad you didn't run and the test went ok! hahaha! keep on being healthy mate! :D
ReplyDeletehahhahahaa. Glad the test went OK! I go to the dentist regualrly but I guess I should start visiting the doctor for checkups too, hey?
ReplyDeleteNobody ever has the time, though!
Will do Rick. I hate visiting the gynae but well at my age, can't run away from that. It is not so much what I will find but the uncomfortable ordeal of the test.
ReplyDeleteOhmygosh Rick, I read this one and your previous post just now, and that was really scary! I'm glad you're okay now!
ReplyDeletePlease do take care of yourself to as I LOVE your stories! ;D
I'll make sure to attend the check ups on time . :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you're healthy and I like to put off going to the dentist. It bugs me to be reminded I have a wisdom tooth but now I'm reminded of my tooth since it is starting to irritate my jaw when I eat and yawn. Guess I'll have to get it taken out but what's the worst if I don't?

LOL! You're funny. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for this reminder. I am glad you are doing well now. =)
Good boy! Proud of you that you had an exam, hehe.
ReplyDelete..and when it comes to all those tests and so, I still remember my blood test when I had to test it in order to get my drivers license. I remember that I fainted, ha ha... And since then I am terribly scared to go to a doctor...
HAHA oh my. well its like like I enjoy a pap test but you gotta do what you gotta do...
ReplyDeleteGreat reminder. I'm not a fan of doc visits (who is really?) but you're right about being proactive. Glad your visit turned out okay. =)
ReplyDelete(It was gloomy and raining earlier that morning! Plus I get cold easily so that's why. ;)
good job Rick! and congrats for everything and hows seeing nurses often..hehe!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is my sickness too... I hate going to the doctor and finding out if something is REALLY wrong. I do not self-medicate but I self diagnose and I always assume that I have the most puny explanation to my symptoms. Anyway, this post reminds me that I need to go back to my doctor soon... I hate you fpor it, btw! (Hahaha!)
