Back to School

Do you remember your very first day of school? Is there one thing that really stands out? I have one memory that overshadows everything else.

An aunt who lived nearby was driving her daughter (3rd grade) to school and offered us a ride. My mom went to make sure I ended up in the right place on my very first day of school ever. My older brother rode along too. Once we were in the car, my cousin started crying. Then she started screaming--she was a nervous child, very high-strung.

I sat there quietly in the backseat, next to her. My brother was on the other side of her. I think my aunt wanted her in the middle so she couldn't try to get out. I tried to make eye contact with my brother, but he was looking out the window. I didn't say anything, but I was thinking, "Where are these people taking me???" I wasn't afraid when I got in the car, but once she started screaming I was terrified. Everything was fine at school and I got over that first day scare within...oh, maybe a month or two. She really screamed!!!

At the start of the next school year the aunt offered us a ride again and again we accepted. My cousin was a year older and I was sure she wouldn't repeat the terrible scene from the year before. I was wrong. I think she was worse.

At the start of the 3rd grade it was raining, but I refused the ride and walked to school. I could hear my cousin screaming as the car pulled off. Thankfully she grew out of her 1st day jitters before she got to high school.

So, any significant memories of your first day of school? Were you a first day screamer?

  1. hehe thankfully she got over that before high school! :D I have random memories of my first days of school. I remember my first day of kindergarten, my dad dropped me off to school and I had a Mcd's drink in my hand (random fact i remember). I was super super super shy and I think I shared the story already of me not talking at all all throughout kindergarten. haha! My first day of post-sec, my dad dropped me off again, it brought back fond memories of first day of kindergarten :) Before I got out of the car he assured me that i would be fine... and i was :D

  5. OMG do you still talk to your cousin? im sure she will find it hilarious now. because imagining it had me giggling to myself! :))

i had a very memorable first day back in 2nd grade, when my Papa decided to walk me to class (yes, he entered the school building) in complete military uniform! you know the fancy ones they wear to turnovers or special events because i think he was about to attend an even that day. but WHOA, did he scare all of my classmates and my teacher! LOL but that worked well for me because i never got bullied or anything. hahaha i like that memory. thanks for reminding me rick! :)

we also have dark, white and milk choco kitkats here. Im so thrilled to have the japanese kitkats, its so fun to eat and enjoy the flavor! i tried the cherry blossom green tea last night, it was a tad sweeter than what i usually like, but the green tea flavor is amazing! my taste buds were delighted. LOL :P

  22. hahaah what a funny story, although I'm sure it wasn't funny for you living it! I don't remember my first day except that my mom was really nervous b/c I was a "problem child". I just remember falling in love with the doll house they had in the classroom (I was obsessed with miniature houses back then)

  24. LOL oh how i've missed your stories. i have to get better at keeping up with my reading here!!

i don't remember my first day, but i always loved school. and i went to preschool before kindergarten so i was used to the atmosphere.

in fact, i met my best friend before we went to kindergarten so i already had a friend on the first day...can't believe we're still best friends even after i've moved away and married...such a blessing.

LOL and you can take me off that missing persons list, mister!! xo

  25. Oh, my. My first day of school was full of colours..! I was SO excited..! My mom told me that I couldn't stop talking and I wouldn't stay seated. I keep going to the other children's tables and strike up conversations. And then at the end of the year, in my report card, my home teacher wrote "Ana Jonessy is smart but very talkative. Very hard to handle and her things are everywhere." LMAO!

  26. I remember I'd be terrified to go to school on the first day.. every year when I was younger. My mom never cared though. She just told me I was being silly. But I was REALLY scared! Haha I look back now and I have no idea why.
