The alternate title for these posts is, "Pity My Family"--because they have to put up with me. Some of the situations I share in "Life" posts require some background, some lead-in. But I don't think the two examples below need any introduction. They are just normal, everyday types of exchanges at our house.
Conversation #1
Me: I need a new pillow.
Wife: Me too.
Me: These wore out too quickly. No more pillows from Macy's.
Wife: Let's donate them to the animal shelter so the animals can sleep on them.
Me: No, I don't want the dogs to get my scent!!!
Conversation #2
Wife: I feel drunk (she was really tired).
Me: (half-singing) Sober girls around me they be acting like they drunk, they be acting like they drunk.
Wife: What did you say?
Me: (half-singing, again) Sober girls around me they be acting like they drunk, they be acting like they drunk.
Daughter: (incredulous) Why mom? Why would you ask him to repeat that??? Please don't ask him to say things like that a second time!!!
My friend Rooth reminded me yesterday that my kids wish I didn't have access to current pop culture (slang, song lyrics, etc.). But like them, I live and breath and I'm bound to pick things up here and there. And it's so much fun to see how they react when I make use of that knowledge. :)
PS - They don't like it much better when I use slang from my grandfather's time and talk as if I lived then (You kids don't know what it was like during the Depression!). Can't make 'em happy. lol
Haha Oh Rick this just gives me an insight of how my son is going to be like when he's older. I'm sure he will tell me to stop trying to sing to the type of music he likes.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do hope that if my son is anything like me that he will appreciate the type of music I like such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Who, and so forth. Although, if it does come to that point I definitely will get a kick out of making him feel slightly uncomfortable, ha!

I'm sure he'll like the music you listen to--my grandfather got me interested in Robert Goulet!!! No one even knows who he was anymore, but I have a CD of his biggest hits (Impossible Dream--great song). Besides, it's impossible not to like those great old bands. But hopefully you will get a chance to have some fun teasing him a little. :)
DeleteI hope so. I feel like that is just the way it goes. My mom did it to me, and she still does it to me. She used to think it was hilarious when she would sing along and dance to Britney Spears.. haha. I think its hilarious now, but I definitely did not that think that was funny when I was in high school. :)
DeleteThat is HILARIOUS that you know those lyrics. And if my dad sang songs like that, I think I'd act exactly like your daughter did
ReplyDeleteLOL, how about if he sang Sinatra, Goulet or Caillet (I like that the last two rhyme)??? I've been known to mix all 3 into my singing performances (in the shower). But also BSB, Green Day, various Josh's, Bruno, Barry White, Bentley, Disney songs and too many more to mention--many of which I'd be embarrassed to mention (like Flo Rida--but only one song)...and then there are the songs I make up. :)
DeleteAny requests? And there is no song titled "quiet please"! I've gotten that request before. :D
LOL a true indication of how our children think we're embarrassing and so uncool haha!
ReplyDeleteIt's like they have us confused with our parents. :)
DeleteAT least it gives us an opportunity to have a little fun with them.
The thing I have noticed about kids is they mock and ridicule you if you aren't aware of the latest pop culture trends, but then they act offended if you are. Go figure!
ReplyDeleteThat sums it up perfectly. Since we're going to be at odds anyway, I don't feel guilty going on the offensive to have a little fun with them. :)
DeleteYou did not just type out them lyrics, rick!! xD
ReplyDeleteI have given up trying to get my aunts (who are *somehow* up to date with the "trendy" songs and stuff) to stop breaking out into "cool" dance moves during family events.
Haha, it's scary, isn't it!!! Maybe if you start capturing their shenanigans on tape they'll stop. And if they don't, you'll have great recordings. :)
Deletehahaha anecdote #2 is hilarious. I can just imagine how mortified/amazed I would feel if my dad did that! Reminds me of the moment when my dad casually mentioned how him and my mom tried to learn the Gangnam style dance over one weekend.
ReplyDeleteWow! If they mastered it, mom and dad would have had quite a surprise for you. Maybe they have mastered it and are simply saving it for the next family wedding. :)
DeleteHaha, hilarious! My dad used to do things that would embarass me and he loved repeating the "slangs" that I used as if he was cool enough to use them too. Oh please dad! :) :)
ReplyDeletexo, Yi-chia
Always Maylee
Haha, I like your dad! Honestly, from the dad's side, it is SO much fun. It would be easy to get carried away and do it too often, but then it wouldn't be funny. It's important to wait for the right moment. :)
DeleteWelcome back!
hahaha singing what is cool around young people is the most productive way of making something uncool, I think when I have kids and if they want tattoos I would tell them go ahead but I will get the same tattoo as the one you have just so they won't do it!
ReplyDeleteThat is brilliant! With that approach, you're going to have the great kids all the other parents hold up as examples to their own kids (Why can't you be more like Rick???). lol
DeleteThe first one is so random! But lol on using pop culture around your daughter. You are über cool because even I don't know where those lyrics are from.
ReplyDeleteRandom comments like that (that are out of snyc with a normal conversation) seem to make my wife happy. That one gave her a good laugh. Hopefully the laugh wasn't because she imagined the dogs getting my scent and "treeing" me. :)
