I was planning to make an announcemen today, but Friday is the worst day for that sort of thing. Unless you're firing someone. Friday is perfect for that. But I'm not firing anyone, so the announcement will have to wait.
Instead, I'd like to re-share a vacation story. Lisa (from expandng) got me thinking about vacations.
Who doesn’t love summer vacation??? Whether you’re a child or adult (or a little of both), it’s something to look forward to. Each year during my dad’s summer vacation we would have a Sunday picnic next to the creek on his family farm; we’d spend an evening at a carnival (funnel cake!!!) and we would spend one day at a beach on the Chesapeake Bay. The rest of the week we would do one special project or another. One year we built a carport. Other years we shingled the roof, dug ditches, built sheds, cleared a field on the farm...well, you get the idea.
But this isn’t a story about work. It’s about the annual trip to the beach on which I learned to swim. It was a great little beach. There were trees close to the sand, so you could sit in the shade on cool grass if you got overheated. There were inexpensive arcade games and skee ball. Aunts and uncles joined us and they usually had good food to share.
The year I turned seven, my dad took me out in the water to teach me to swim. He pointed to an aunt floating by (on her back) to convince me that people float and swimming was easy. He held me at water level so I could practice—I worked my arms and legs like a pro. He kept saying he wasn't going to let go, I should just keep paddling and kicking.
Then, of course, he let go. I kept working my arms and legs…and I sank like a stone. Within seconds I could feel that I had settled on the bottom and I was lying on my dad’s feet. But I was still paddling and kicking!!! Eventually he reached down to pull me up and we made our way back to shore. I took my little bucket and shovel to a different part of the beach so he wouldn’t get the idea to try to teach me to swim a second time—I thought he was just a little too slow pulling me up that first time. LOL!
Okay, so this wasn’t really a story about me learning to swim. It was a story about me learning to sink! But I was REALLY good at it. :D I did learn to swim two years later, in a pool.
Soooo, how did you learn to swim???
Not until 7 did your dad teach you to swim? I thought all "Americans" were thrown into pools at age 2 ;). We hope to teach J next summer. And when I saw we, I mean Alan, because I can't swim. Took adult lessons 5 years ago, but it's hard to keep up the technique when I haven't swam in 5 years.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's a wealthy American thing, we were towards the other end of the income spectrum. :) My wife can only swim for short bursts, but the kids can both swim and stay afloat.
DeleteThanks again for the mention, it made me smile. In part because I didn't think of this as one of my close calls in life. I've posted about many of those--and summarized some of them here: http://ricademus.blogspot.com/2011/12/close-calls-normal.html
It was compulsory for all 9 years old in my country to learn swimming. It would be an out of curriculum activity.
ReplyDeleteI didn't learn swimming from there.
Next it was compulsory for all 14 years old in my country to learn swimming. It would be an out of curriculum activity.
I managed to skip lessons as I was a transfer student.
I never knew how to swim. I could kick like a cat and sink but the funny thing is I knew how to swim a little when I was very young w/o all the compulsory swimming lesson.
That's probably the best way to learn, on our own when we're little. I started out "swimming" underwater and that evolved into swimming on the surface.
DeleteMaybe KH could take you swimming and help you master it???
Kh made me cry in the pool many years ago. Wahahaha... he thinks I'm so lousy and I felt so lousy and I cried. lol
DeleteAwww, I'm sorry. It can be hard for spouses to work together on some things. I upset my KH trying to help her learn to bowl when we were teenagers.
DeleteSounds like a Rick-escapade if I've ever read one. I was thrown into the deep end at two years of age. Just kidding but that is really how early swim lessons started for me. Luckily I had a very attentive swim instructor or else I'm sure my dad would have the same approach yours did
ReplyDeletelol, well, I'm glad you learned to swim. Maybe learning to swim is like getting a haircut--a much more pleasant experience when it doesn't involve parents.
DeleteI really did dodge my dad the rest of that day. I remember peeking at him from behind a tree and generally keeping track of his whereabouts so he couldn't sneak up on my for a 2nd try. :)
Your dad had some very unique child raising practices. :-)
ReplyDeleteI can't remember how I learned to swim, but I know it wasn't my dad who taught me since all he could do was dog paddle.
Like the time he taught me not to touch spark plug wires by telling me to hold one (on the lawn mower) while he pulled the rope to start it. It felt like I'd been shot in the elbow--and I never got near a SP wire (while the engine was starting/running) ever again. LOL!
DeleteMy dad's favorite method was the side-stroke. I never saw my mom get in the water, so I'm not sure if she could swim or not.
I learned how to swim at the YMCA when I was little. They had these fun fish names for each level, so I started as a Guppy and graduated as a Shark, haha. I'm pretty sure I never went swimming with my parents!
ReplyDeletexo, Yi-chia
Always Maylee
That's a nice way for kids to learn--working towards being a shark sounds like fun! I can hear the Jaws music in my head now.
Deletehaha. i can't remember how I learned how to swim. and fridays... fridays... i can't remember when the last time I am excited about a weekend more, now i get excited about a weekend because I make money LOL. BUT this saturday i AM going to go see star trek and make go for a nice dinner many thanks to you YAYYYYY now I am excited for saturday :D
ReplyDeleteI think not remembering in this situation is good--it means it wasn't something that stuck with you. :)
DeleteI hope you have a wonderful Saturday!!!
