Something amusing is happening on my Instagram account. Well, it's amusing to me. I'm sure it has happened to everyone with an account.
When I first opened the account, I started getting random "likes" from people I didn't (and don't) know. I hoped they were friends of friends deciding to reach out...and sometimes they were. But most often they were ladies* apparently trying to sell something. I say "apparently" because I never clicked on the links on their IG accounts, so I don't know for sure. (The accounts are all the same, six to 12 pictures of a girl who is not completely unattractive and a link to click. Maybe to talk with her? I don't know.)
The funny thing is that over the past few months the strangers visiting my IG account (in hopes of peaking my interest and getting me to click on their links) have been men*. The kooks running the operation finally noticed I wasn't responding to the strange women*, so they started having strange men* visit instead.
I joked with my wife that it means I have cross-over appeal. But these appeals to cross-over are strictly business, hustlers looking to separate a fool from his money. That part is not so amusing. I'd like to think no one clicks on those links, but someone must or the kooks wouldn't keep trying.
* Of course there's no way to tell who actually manages those IG accounts. It could be one 90 year-old man running the entire operation. In fact, I could be that 90 year-old man!!! But I'm not. :D
I always laugh at those accounts that like or follow you randomly. I mean, the link itself looks so suspicious as it is, you would think people aren't as gullible to click on them.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are the "buy your followers" accounts. Now I just report them as inappropriate. =P
I would hope you are not that 90 year old man!
lol...no, no, no, I'm not. But I do feel like him some mornings--I might need a new mattress. :D
DeleteWe can buy followers??? I haven't seen those yet. It does not sound like any fun.
for a while follows from weird Russian accounts displaying nothing but collages of luxury items. no link or anything identifiable though. I wonder what that was about. since I deleted my Instagram again after a couple of month [just can't get over a by now almost unhealthy dislike of it] I will never find out though. maybe you can :)
ReplyDeleteI have a great curiosity about many things, but I won't be checking out those kooks. If I click on the links, they win! :)
DeleteMaybe the same people, just different profile pix :).
ReplyDeleteThat sounds right. I hope they don't steal other people's pictures to set up the sketchy accounts. If they are, they should steal pics from more interesting people. :)
DeleteI know what kind of accounts you are referring to! I initially thought these are bought followers until I have these accounts following me too when I didn't buy or manipulate any followers or likes. It is all very strange. I suspect they are all related coz the pattern is too similar. I recently encountered something very strange on IG too. People are following me like nobody's business ever sine I was at 8K followers. The followers keep coming in droves for the past week and I've hot 10.3K right now. Some accounts are just too weird too though I've totally stop wasting time clicking into these accounts to see. I wonder what's happening.
ReplyDeleteYou're just very, very popular! Attractive and rich people get more friends than they want--God help those poor bastards who are both!!! lol
DeleteThose rando IG followers kind of weird me out, particularly if they're real and not just ads. Although I will agree, you do have cross-over appeal ;)
ReplyDeleteCan't be 100% sure, but I think most of the real people who randomly like one of my pictures is doing it in hopes of adding a follower. Thank you, but I'm pretty sure my appeal crossed-over (into the light). :)
