There can be only one.
That was true in the Highlander and it applies to other things as well. In this case I'm talking about tea--which is shocking to me. I'm not really a tea drinker.
Of course, there are many different types of tea. But I've discovered that for me there is only one "real" tea. Red Rose (original black tea). My parents and grandparents drank Red Rose. When I had iced tea as a child (which was every day during the summer), it was Red Rose. When I needed a hot tea bag to hold over an eye, it was Red Rose. When I had to make...well, you get the picture.
I had a cup of Red Rose recently, for the first time in many years. It was oddly satisfying. The taste brought back a lot of memories. It tasted like home. I've tried lots of different brands and varieties over the years (while treating sore throats, colds, etc.). Some were better than others. But Red Rose is the one. I'm glad I found that out. I may be a tea drinker yet. :)
PS - I never imagined that tea could ever inspire me to write a blog post. Ever.
Ha! I could write a dozen posts about tea, Rick. Red Rose was the tea my mom used for making iced tea in the summers, too. I am now a convert to Yorkshire Gold tea from the UK (I believe the tea leaves are from India, but might be wrong about that). If you ever see some give it a try and let me know what you think. Oh, and the one tea I just can't bring myself to drink no matter what brand it is is Earl Grey.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion--I think I read about YG on your blog and discovered Amazon sells it. I googled Red Rose before writing the post. It turns out it's a Canadian tea that got its start in the late 1800's. Perhaps my uncle from Saskatoon introduced it to the family.
DeleteIt does make a nice iced tea.
for me, it's english breakfast from Twinnings. if i'm going to drink tea, it's that one because it always reminds me of when i was in rome and i drank that every morning for 3 weeks!
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice when a smell or a taste brings back nice memories and let us experience them all over again. :)
DeleteWhere do you buy said tea?
ReplyDeleteOnly at your finer, high class establishments. Is there a Piggily-Wiggily near you??? lol! (there used to be a grocery store chain by that name)
DeleteIt may not be the best tea, but it's what I grew up with. All of the grocery stores here sell it and Amazon carries it.
things you had growing up will always be special...
ReplyDeleteYes, this post is not actually about tea at all. It's about the memories and feelings that it brought back for me. I'm not a tea drinker.
DeleteFoods and smells do that for me - bring back memories. Powerful, those senses!
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful when they take us someplace pleasant. We should all probably stock a few things (low calorie for me) in our kitchens that help us de-stress by bringing up happy memories.
DeleteHope you have a great weekend!
hmm. red rose has always been a tea at my work wher I look at it and pass it up for lemon grass or green tea... perhaps I should give it a try on monday for the first time lol
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you can try it for free instead of having to buy it. It's good tea (and it must be cheap if my family used it), but nothing special. On the plus side, you'll experience what I thought all tea tasted like until I was in my 20s. It will be like you're visiting my past. lol
DeletePS - It's Canadian!
I was a tea drinker but I've never ever tried red rose tea before. We seldom drink black tea here. Only red and green tea. I've cut down a lot on tea but after reading this post of yours, I'm inspired to try Red Rose tea when I see one.
ReplyDeleteDid you cut down on tea because it was upsetting your stomach?
DeleteI've never tried red tea. That sounds interesting. I don't know if it's even sold here. Green tea was exotic when I was a kid, now it's mainstream. No one in my house drinks much tea. So whatever I buy when I'm sick lasts a long, long time.
Yes it is because of that reason. I actually love to drink tea a lot.
