I currently have no good ideas for posts, so I searched through drafts and found this old one--which I lost track of somehow. Since it's weird to mention the same blogger two posts in a row, this one is perfect for today:
Have you ever stumbled across a fact about yourself or your life that made you stop and think? Something you knew, but never really thought about--until something brought it to your attention? That happened to me today.
I was visiting blogs, enjoying the usual extraordinary offerings--posts about food, books, health, personal experiences, etc. As an aside, one of the great things about blogging is meeting people from all over, with different backgrounds, different experiences, and being reminded that people are more alike than different. It's easy to relate to people when you give them and yourself the chance.
Included among my destinations was a stop at Always Maylee. The idea of wearing pink came up in today's post. Aside from once having worn a pink shirt as an usher at a wedding, that's something I never do. And yet it reminded me of something. When I was 11, my two older brothers and I switched bedrooms with the only sister who was still living at home. The "girls room" was larger than ours. It was also pink. My brothers didn't mind and I was just excited to get a bed that didn't fold up and roll away. So it stayed pink. Eventually my brothers moved out and I finally painted it yellow (over the pink it ended up looking sort of peachy--it was a nice color).
What I knew, but hadn't realized (if that makes sense), is that from the age of 11 until 20 my bedroom was pink. Nine years with a pink bedroom. Throughout my teen years my bedroom was pink. Pink!!! That doesn't sound like a big deal today, but back in the dark ages of my youth it was. I can't believe my dad allowed it. Part of me wonders if the plan was to make sure we didn't invite people into our room. If that was it, it was genius--and worked like a charm. :)
Question: Do you believe the color of a bedroom has any effect on its inhabitants? Did the pink help make me who I am today? Is that what gets the blame??? lol
Hah, I really hope that pink is what made you the person that you are today. Just because it'd be way too anticlimactic (especially after all your blog posts) to attribute it to a bedroom wall colour
ReplyDeleteHaha, yeah, all that other stuff had to play a big part in shaping me. But the pink may have helped make me a little more (or a little less) of something. :)
DeleteIn Psychology (I'm a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Psychology), colors have a effect on a person's emotions. Pink is the colour that stabilizes emotions. In hospitals, when a person goes on an episode of their illness (action manifestations include having fits of rage, crying, etc), they make the person stay inside a pink room in order to calm their emotions and stabilize it.
ReplyDeleteIt is also the reason why Pink is somehow the colour of girls rooms because female are usually more emotional than male.
So now that I told you that, what do you think? Did Pink have any effect on you?
That's interesting! I am the calmest person in my family--perhaps my two brothers were too old to be influenced when we moved into that room. Plus, they moved out much sooner. By calmest, I mean in an emergency. I'm also slower to anger--but it can make for a good story when I do get angry (as with most of us, right???). :)
DeleteI didn't know you had a degree in psychology. Now I'm thinking I've way overshared on my blogs. LOL
Colours can definitely influence people's moods. I'm not so sure about shaping their characters though. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to settle for having my mood improved. :)
DeleteIf pink makes a person to turn out like you then the world needs more pink rooms!!!!
ReplyDeleteDid you have fun at the family gathering btw? We're waiting for new posts ;)
haha, some people might not agree with you on that. But thank you! :)
DeleteThe family gathering was so uneventful. I may be able to turn that into a post--wondering who those people were at the party. :)
Haha I'm so glad that my posts can help remind you of so many things. It's like I'm your muse! :)
ReplyDeleteColors can definitely influence and affect people. For my job, I did a whole study about the different affects of each color. Did you know red makes you more hungry? Anyway, I totally think your dad did it on purpose to keep you guys from bringing those ladies back to your room, haha! :)
xo, Yi-chia
Always Maylee
lol, I was thinking ladies when I wrote "people", but I didn't want to say that. You saw right through it anyway! :)
DeleteI didn't know that about red. Now I'm going pay attention to see if my favorite restaurants use red in their decor. I should know, but don't.
It seems you deserve a blog award I created several years ago: The Amusing, Musing, Muse (funny, thoughtful, inspiring). I never actually awarded it to anyone because I didn't want the non-recipients to feel slighted--and if I gave it to everyone it would be meaningless. But you definitely deserve it.
I think it probably did play a role in your development~ To what degree, I dunno - that'd be the whole nature vs nurture argument ^^ I'd venture to guess it played a small role but not big enough to blame any craziness on growing up in a pink room ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, maybe just a little craziness--the ghost in that part of the house seemed to like the pink. She grabbed my ankle after I finished painting the room yellow. :)
DeleteYour bedroom actually sounds beautiful though ou are the first male I know who had a pink room. The choice of colour for our bedrooms esp as kids and teenagers is really important to us. It sort of brings out our identity. Could you imagine inviting a girl over to your room and she saw -- PINK. She might probably excuse herself or she might be drawn to you even more.
ReplyDeleteWhich would you do, if kh had a pink room when you met??? It didn't scare my kh away. :)
Delete"Hah! Let Rick have a pink room. This way my son will stay chaste til he's married for sure."
ReplyDelete-Rick's cunning dad.
I should've bought that yellow paint years earlier!!! I had the room to myself for 2.5 years before I finally painted it. Foolish boy. :)
DeleteHmm interesting idea you have there. I have heard that colors do influence the room's inhabitants, but more as in mood rather than personality. I don't think pink is supposed to be a very restful color, which is something you'd want in your resting place, so do you recall feeling nervous or irritated a lot during your teen years? lol
ReplyDeleteI did hear a lot of eerie sounds in the dark! :D
DeleteI don't think paint color in your room turns you into who you are. You are probably the way you are because of your brothers ;)
ReplyDeletelol, they did set a great example on what NOT to do and how NOT to act. I owe them a lot. :)
