My Accessories

This will probably be as close as I come to a fashion post (but you never know). The chain and cross you see in the pictures are the only items I wear at all times. I never take them off. Well, almost never. They have to come off for x-rays or MRI's (and to take these pictures), but other than that, always on. It's hard to explain why. I'm certainly not a very good Catholic. I haven't worked an Aswang into a post lately, so I could say I wear it to keep Aswangs away--and that it's doing an amazing job! But the truth is simply that I find comfort in it.

The real story is about what I learned in getting the chain and cross.

When I was 19 my GF knew I wanted a cross and gave me one with a chain for Christmas. But the chain was too small. So we went to the jewelry store to exchange it. When I told the clerk my GF had asked to buy a man's chain to go with the cross, he responded, "Young man, an 18 inch chain IS a man's size." I was shocked. What was a normal neck size? But that shock didn't keep me from hearing the condescension in his tone. We got her money back for both items.

Thanks to genetics, too much "toting that barge and lifting that bale" during my childhood, and an unfortunate dose of gamma radiation (nerdy comic book reference), I have a 19 inch neck. It does its job nicely! ;P

Anyway, a few weeks later I bought myself this cross and 24 inch chain. It's long enough that it doesn't show--as long as I keep my 2nd shirt button buttoned (which I do). The cross is not for show, it's for me.

This post was inspired by Lei of the White Sky Project. She wrote, "Quick! Pop quiz! Who has a more massive neck - The Rock or Thor?"

Or Ricademus??? LOL, no way! Those guys are definitely "more massive".

PS - The pictures are misleading--the chain is very thin and the cross is small.

  4. It is odd that the shop don't carry stock for several different lengths. I wear a cross pendant too accompanied by jade pendant. It's 24/7 on me too except when I go for facials.

  9. A fashion post, huh? Looks like our blogs have been having an effect. :P I like that it is gold, simple, and un-Guido like.

Oh and regarding your last post, I used to work with a girl who would always look to me when people started speaking Spanish to her. The kicker? She was Latina.

(Make it an M&M night! That is, macarons and a movie =)

  11. I think its pretty chic when a man adorns a necklace with a cross or a ring on it. Nothing more though. Unless youre the grunge type with peircings then yeah, coz that can look hot too.

  12. The one who has a massive neck is Britney Spears, Thor or The Rock have normal neck size..

ps. it should be hotter if you don't wear any shirt, keep the necklace hanging that way... *swoon* :D

  14. High-five with Abby on the Filipino reference! I was pleasantly surprised you know about Aswangs too, Rick! In our country, aswangs are like monsters. Stories about them definitely kept me awake when I was young! :D

I love your cross necklace. I also have one I regularly use. One item I never take off is my silver ring on my middle finger on the right hand. I bought it for a company party we had three years ago, and have never removed it since (except when doing X-rays hehe) :)

  15. For those of us not in the know, what is an aswang? I've always thought crosses are a nice looking pendant for a necklace, but never wore one since I'm not Christian hehe.
